More about the Million Dollar Highway:
The Million Dollar Highway (officially U.S. Route 550 in southwestern Colorado) earned its famous nickname from a mix of local lore, construction costs, and stunning scenery. Legend says the road cost a staggering one million dollars to build back in the 1920s when it was paved and expanded. Some believe the nickname stuck because the gravel and fill dirt used during construction contained low-grade gold and silver ore from local mines. Another famous tale claims a weary traveler swore they wouldn't drive the steep, narrow, guardrail-free cliffside road again "for a million dollars". Many people simply say the breathtaking, million-dollar views of the San Juan Mountains make the dangerous drive worth it.
